Journey to Lone Pine: Life Along the Oregon Trail in Ridgewalkers

In Ridgewalkers: A Tale of Siblings, Suspense, and Sasquatch, reaching Lone Pine begins with a long ride west. Ophie and Naomi share a crowded wagon with Ada, Artie, Cecil, and their grizzled caravan driver, Jimbo. Each traveler carries different hopes for what might be waiting at the end of the Oregon Trail, but the road soon challenges those expectations.

For Ophie and Naomi, the destination is not the mine. Lone Pine is simply the closest town to the homestead where they hope to build a different life.

The First Miles West

Early in the journey, Artie is still enthusiastic. When the wagon passes a sign marking Mile 20, he happily points out how far they have already traveled.

Jimbo is considerably less cheerful.

Having made a living taking groups across the country on the Oregon Trail, he knows what lies ahead. His warnings clash with Artie’s optimism and Ada’s hopes for the future.

Outside the wagon, the landscape is beautiful but filled with reminders of those who traveled before them. The pioneers pass expansive prairies, rust-colored rock formations, and belongings abandoned beside the trail. Pianos, dressers, and phonographs sit weathered along the road. Makeshift crosses and grave markers become increasingly common as the miles pass.

Chasing a Bit of Freedom

The travelers do not all have the same plans.

Artie and Ada look toward Lone Pine as a place to build a house. Cecil expects mining to make him rich. Ophie and Naomi, however, explain that they are heading for a homestead rather than the mine.

When Cecil questions why they would travel so far instead of choosing somewhere closer, Naomi gives a simple answer: “What’s so wrong with chasing a bit of freedom?”

She says they plan on farming chickens and growing a few things if the soil allows it. They are also tired of the noise and soot of city life.

That hope gives their difficult journey a purpose.

Two Months on the Trail

The next two months bring moments that are uncomfortable, strange, and sometimes funny.

Artie tries to learn how to skin a rabbit from Cecil and promptly becomes sick. Ophie and Naomi flip a coin to decide who must deal with an overflowing bucket. The travelers encounter questionable food, flash floods, soggy clothes, starving oxen, and burned-down settlements.

There are also bison along the way, including a mountain of bison skulls towering beside the route.

Through it all, Ophie continues carefully maintaining his appearance, discreetly rubbing charcoal into his pores to create the shadow of shaved facial hair. Artie keeps trying to repair his battered banjo with whatever materials he can find.

By Mile 2,000, the scenery begins to change. Rock and prairie gradually give way to trees, waterfalls, lakes, and mountains. The Oregon Trail is carrying them closer to their destination.

A Stop at Fort Vancouver

Before reaching Lone Pine, the group stops at Fort Vancouver.

Jimbo returns to the wagon carrying food and bottles. Later, Artie, Cecil, and Jimbo sing together around the campfire with off-key banjo strums while the others laugh.

But the stop also leaves Ophie with a troubling sight. Ophie notices a frightened and battered Native girl walking behind a group of fur trappers. It is one more moment showing that the country these pioneers are entering carries a history they do not fully understand.

After gathering supplies, the group leaves the fort with more trepidation than before. Welcome to Lone Pine

At last, a rough sign appears beside the Oregon Trail:

“Lone Pine Mining Corp., Washington Territories.”

Mt. Olympus rises beyond a thicket of ancient trees as the wagon approaches town. By now, the passengers who began the journey with excitement look dirty, tired, and haggard.

Lone Pine itself is hardly the romantic West some might have imagined. Its main street is short, and a massive fallen tree has already partially crushed one of its few buildings.

Still, for Ophie and Naomi, this rough settlement marks the beginning of what they came west to find: their homestead and the chance to make a life of their own.

They have reached the end of one difficult journey.

Beyond Lone Pine, however, the ancient trees are waiting.
